Following on from the weekend’s Football Remembers events, last night saw a ‘Christmas Truce’ match played at the Avenue Stadium, Dorchester.
A Dorchester Town XI defeated a Bovington Army team 7-0 at the, with the proceeds going towards the charities Combat Stress and Blesma (the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association). Before kick-off the teams dressed in British and German military uniforms for a remembrance service with music and carols from the Royal Artillery band and a military wives choir.
Back in August a team representing Newark Town U21s travelled to Belgium to play FC Emmendingen 03 at Messines near Ypres, which appears to have been the first of these commemorative games. The match was played on 24 August with the German team winning 4-1. A programme was produced and was available at the time through Newark Town FC. Many schools throughout the country have also been playing games to mark the occasion over the last week.
